This is the broadest page on the site and the least uniform. A gran fondo can be a timed mass-participation road race with a closed course and a results sheet, or it can be a long organised ride with a feed station and no clock. Both sit here, because both are what the organisers call them.
The distance convention is loose but real: most events here run 100 to 160 kilometres, and 224 of the 574 are gravel rather than road. We rate 345 of them 3 out of 5 and 223 at 1 out of 5, and that gap is the honest signal. Read the individual race before assuming difficulty from the label.
Italy is where the format is most competitive. An Italian gran fondo will have riders treating it as a race whatever the paperwork says, and the front of the field goes out accordingly.
If you are choosing a first one, the flatter Belgian and Dutch events are more forgiving than anything in the Dolomites.
Domande frequenti
What actually is a gran fondo?
The label is loose. It can be a timed mass-participation road race on a closed course with a results sheet, or a long organised ride with a feed station and no clock. Both are listed here because both are what their organisers call them.
How long is a gran fondo?
Most of the 574 events here run 100 to 160 kilometres. 224 of them are gravel rather than road.
How do I judge the difficulty?
Read the individual race rather than the label. We rate 345 at 3 out of 5 and 223 at 1 out of 5, which is a wide gap for events sharing one name.
Which countries have the most?
Italy with 81, France with 68 and Spain with 48, out of 47 countries in total.
