Steamboat sits at roughly 2,000 metres and the courses climb from there, so a rider who is comfortable at 100 miles at sea level should expect the same distance here to feel harder and take longer. Arriving a few days early helps more than any amount of extra training in the final fortnight.
The surface is genuine mixed gravel rather than hardpack dirt road, and the ranch country it crosses is open and exposed. Wind and afternoon storms are both normal in August.
Red at 38 miles is the option that makes this a realistic weekend for someone who has not raced gravel before.
Road closures are limited, so this is not a closed-course event and traffic rules still apply on the paved sections.
