The blue-chip end is the World Marathon Majors (Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, Sydney) plus the Olympic-style world championships. Below that sits a deep field of national majors, charity races, and small-town events that are often easier to get into and just as enjoyable.
If you're chasing a personal best, filter by elevation and prestige; if you're chasing the experience, filter by region and let the city pick the race for you.

Running: frequently asked questions
How do I find a marathon or half-marathon to run?
Browse the running index and filter by region, date, and distance to find road marathons, half-marathons, and 10ks near you or at a destination you want to travel to. Each race page lists the date, course profile, and a direct link to official registration. If you're chasing a personal best, sort by elevation for the flattest, fastest courses.
What are the World Marathon Majors?
The World Marathon Majors comprise Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, Sydney, and Cape Town. Cape Town became the eighth Major in 2026 and will stage its first Major in 2027. The Six Star medal still refers to completing the original six races; entry routes vary between ballots, charity places, and qualifying times.
When should I register for a big city marathon?
Major city marathons open registration six to nine months ahead and the ballot-based ones (London, New York, Tokyo) close within days. Smaller regional and charity races stay open much longer and are far easier to get into. If a race here shows registration as open, don't wait: the flagship events sell out fast.
How do I pick a first marathon?
For a first marathon, filter by a flat course profile, a large field for on-course support, and a date that gives you a full training block. City marathons with generous cut-off times take the time pressure off. Avoid races with significant elevation gain or aggressive cut-offs until you have one finish behind you.
