Below the franchises, indie races at scenic venues (Norseman, Embrunman, Alpe d'Huez Long Course) often have stronger fields and more character than the franchised events at the same distance.
If you're new, filter by sprint or Olympic distance and look for races with non-wetsuit-legal water temperatures only if you're confident in open-water swimming.

Triathlon: frequently asked questions
What are the standard triathlon distances?
The four common triathlon distances are sprint (about 750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run), Olympic (1.5 km / 40 km / 10 km), middle or half-distance (1.9 km / 90 km / 21.1 km), and full-distance (3.8 km / 180 km / 42.2 km). The two long formats are the ones the big franchises brand around. Beginners almost always start at sprint or Olympic distance.
How do I find a beginner-friendly triathlon?
Filter the triathlon index by sprint or Olympic distance and look for events with calm, non-tidal, wetsuit-legal swims. A large local race with a pool or sheltered-water swim removes most of the first-timer anxiety. Each race page shows the distance, venue, and registration link so you can match the format to your experience.
What is the difference between the big triathlon franchises?
The main franchises are the full and half-distance series run by the sport's largest brand, Challenge Family (mostly long-course events in Europe), and the regional national-federation series. Alongside them sit indie long-course races like Norseman, Embrunman, and Alpe d'Huez that often draw stronger fields and more character. Distances are comparable across brands, so filter by distance and region.
Do I need a wetsuit for a triathlon?
Wetsuit rules depend on water temperature: most races make wetsuits mandatory below roughly 16°C and forbid them above roughly 24°C, with an optional band in between. The race page and its official rules state the wetsuit policy for the expected conditions. If you are a nervous swimmer, choose a wetsuit-legal event for the extra buoyancy.
