The UTMB World Series has consolidated a lot of the qualification chase, but plenty of the best events sit outside it: Diagonale des Fous, Tor des Géants, Lavaredo, Ultra Trail Cape Town.
Filter by elevation and distance first, then check for the cutoffs: most trail races have aggressive time limits even for back-of-pack runners.

Trail Running: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a trail race and an ultra?
A trail race is any run held off-road, from a 10k forest loop upward; an ultra is any race longer than the marathon distance of 42.2 km, on trail or road. Most iconic mountain events are both: long and off-road. On a trail race, elevation gain and technical terrain matter far more than finish time.
What are the most famous trail and ultra races?
The best-known mountain ultras are UTMB in the Alps, Western States and Hardrock in the US, and long classics like Tor des Géants, Diagonale des Fous, and Lavaredo. The UTMB World Series now funnels much of the qualification chase, but many top events sit outside it. Filter by distance and elevation to compare them like-for-like.
How do trail race cut-off times work?
Most trail and ultra races set intermediate cut-off times at aid stations as well as an overall finish limit, and they are often strict even for back-of-pack runners. Miss a cut-off and you are pulled from the course. Always check the cut-offs on the race page before entering a long mountain event.
How should I choose a trail race for my level?
Judge a trail race by distance and vertical gain together, not distance alone: a 50k with 3,000 m of climbing is a completely different event from a flat 50k towpath. Beginners should start with a shorter, lower-gain course and build up. Filter by elevation first, then check the terrain description and cut-offs.
