IRONMAN Hamburg
Hamburg is a full-distance IRONMAN run through the middle of a large city, and that is the reason to choose it. The 3.8 km swim is in the Alster, the lake in the centre of town, and the 42.2 km run comes back along its banks with crowds several deep for long sections.
The 180 km bike leaves the water and takes in the city itself, past the Reeperbahn and out through the surrounding countryside. It is flat, technical in places, and fast if you can handle corners and street furniture on a time-trial bike.
The trade-off with a city marathon is the lapped course. You pass close to the finish more than once, which is excellent for support and difficult psychologically when you still have most of a marathon to run.
Early June in northern Germany is usually mild, but the Alster is a shallow urban lake and its temperature swings with the preceding fortnight.
