IRONMAN Lake Placid
Lake Placid is the full distance that most North American athletes measure the others against. It starts with 3.8 km in Mirror Lake, where a cable runs under the surface and swimming beside it removes almost all the sighting. Get on that line and hold it.
Then 180 km through the Adirondacks. You descend fast and early towards Keene, and every metre of that comes back as climbing later in the loop, twice, with the final ascent into town arriving when your legs have already made their position clear. The 42.2 km run is rolling rather than flat and finishes on the Olympic Oval from the 1980 Winter Games.
Two things to plan for. The descent is genuinely fast and needs to be ridden within your handling ability, not your ambition. And late July in the mountains can produce a cold wet swim morning and a hot afternoon marathon on the same day.
