Four distances stack: Sprint at the short end, then Super, then Beast, then Ultra. Every venue we index runs Sprint, most run Super, 20 run Beast and 11 run Ultra, so a single weekend often lets you pick your level rather than travel for one.
The obstacles are the constant, and failing one costs burpees rather than your race. That penalty is what separates the format from a trail race with props: it is possible to run a fast course and lose all of it on a rig or a spear throw.
Difficulty spreads wider here than on most pages, from 2 out of 5 up to 5, and 11 of the 37 carry that top mark. Read the individual event; the gap between a Sprint and an Ultra at the same venue is enormous.
Note that everything we currently index is US-based. Spartan runs internationally, and the gap is our coverage rather than the calendar.
Frequently asked questions
What are the Spartan distances?
Four, stacking up: Sprint, Super, Beast and Ultra. Every venue we index runs Sprint, most run Super, 20 run Beast and 11 run Ultra.
What happens if I fail an obstacle?
Burpees, not disqualification. That penalty is what separates the format from a trail race with props: you can run a fast course and lose all of it on a rig or a spear throw.
How hard is it?
Difficulty spreads from 2 out of 5 to 5 across the 37 races we index, with 11 at the top mark. The gap between a Sprint and an Ultra at the same venue is enormous.
Are there races outside the United States?
Spartan runs internationally, but everything currently on our calendar is US-based. That is a gap in our coverage rather than in their calendar.
